Properties of Water – Cohesion, Adhesion & Surface tension

The reason why water will go into a droplets is because of cohesion – some of the molecules hold on tightly to each other so it stays together. Water also has a characteristic called adhesion which causes it to spread out on most surfaces (not wax!)

In a large body of water the water molecules hold on strongly to the deeper water molecules and not as strongly to the substance (air) above it. This is called surface tension and is the reason belly flops hurt and insects and materials can float – if they are light or flattened out.
